Tarn Pop Tab Bracelet - Free Crochet Pattern

For me, I'm not completely dressed unless I am wearing bracelets.  Sharing with you this simple casual bracelet design that makes up quickly.

I was going couponing the next day and knew I would be out shopping for a long period of time. So comfort and sturdiness was imperative.

I just happen to have left over t-shirt yarn from making this tote -

Materials Needed:

  • Pop Tabs (cleaned and same size):  8 or number needed to fit around your wrist comfortably when finishe
  • T-Shirt Yarn:  Strips cut in 1/2" thin strips - 2 colors needed
  • Crochet Hook:  Size F
  • Large Eye Sewing Needle

For each pop tab, with one color join with slip stitch in a hole and single crochet all around the pop tab.  Join with slip stitch in first single crochet stitch.  Fasten off and weave in tail.

Begin piecing pop tabs together by placing right sides together and stitch the sides together until a complete ring has been formed.

With other color, join with slip stitch in back loop of any stitch, *chain, slip stitch in next stitch.  Repeat * around and join with slip stitch to first stitch. Fasten off and weave in tail.

Wear it proudly!!!

Feel free to contact me at plastiquerecreations@yahoo.com if you have any questions.  I would love to see your finished designs.

Pop Tab T-Yarn Granny Square Crochet Pouch - Part 3

I apologize for the delay in posting the last part of this pattern.  I actually thought it had already been completed.

After sewing the lining on.   Join red with a slip stitch to any stitch, single crochet in same stitch and in each stitch around with 3 single crochet stitches in each corner.  Join with a slip stitch in beginning single crochet stitch.  Fasten off and weave in your end.

Now we are ready to finish the sides:

The sides are made with 4 pop tabs starting at the base for a total of 10 middle stitches.  The arrows in the pics below mark the middle which will be the 5th and 6th stitch that will be made in the first hole of the 3rd pop tab.  Working in the bottom of the pop tab and in back loop of pouch, count 4 stitches to the left and place pop tab with wrong side facing you, join red tarn with slip stitch and 2 single crochet stitches in same hole.  Still working in bottom of pop tab with wrong side facing you, lay a 2nd pop tab over 1st pop tab and make 2 single crochet stitches through hole of overlapped pop tabs.  Continue for 2 more pop tabs for a total of 10 single crochet stitches.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Lift up the row of pop tabs so the right side is facing you.  Join gray tarn with a slip stitch in 1st hole, 2 single crochet stitches in same hole and 2 single crochet stitches in each hole across.  Chain 1, turn and continue for 17 more rows or # needed to achieve even heighth.  Fasten off gray, weave in ends.

Working in end gray rows, with red tarn join with slip stitch in end stitch and single crochet in each stitch across and 2 single crochet stitches in side of starting pop tab row.  Finish off and weave in ends.  Repeat edging on the other side.

Flip the pouch over and repeat building the starting 4 pop tab row.

Now we're ready to sew the sides to the pouch - you are welcome to use any method you wish to...  whip stitch, slip stitch, etc..

This pouch was stiched together working on the wrong side through the back loop/front loop using a slip stitch-chain 1 pattern in each stitch across finishing with a slip stitch in last stitch.

Don't worry about turning the pouch inside out because the tarn makes the pouch very flexible/stretchable.

The Finish -

To finish the pouch, make a round of single crochet stitches with red tarn. This round connects everything together making the pouch a whole piece.

(optional) This row is optional.  To give it a more refined finished look, the edging is a round of reverse single crochet with the gray tarn.

A closure (e.g. snap, button, zipper, etc.) was not sewn on this pouch but feel free to use whatever closure you want.

I have a couple of these pouches in my purchase - one is used keep my coupons in after completing my match up list.  The other pouch is used for my compact, lipstick, little hand lotion bottles, etc..

I hope you enjoy this pattern and by all means don't hesitate to ask me any questions by emailing me at twooleydesigns@gmail.com.

Pop Tab T-Yarn Granny Square Crochet Pouch - Part 2

Row 4, adding new pop tab row -
Making sure pop tabs are facing same direction, with right side of pop tab facing right side of piece, single crochet stitch through pop tab hole and 1st stitch of piece.  You might need to look at the back of piece to make sure the hook is going through the correct single crochet stitch of row 3. Single crochet in same pop tab hole and 2nd stitch of row 3.  Essentially, you're repeating the stitch for stitch pattern as you would normally.  Repeat this across.

To continue the pattern:

Connecting the Squares -
Row 1:  Attach red with a slip stitch through the first hole of a pop tab with right sides facing starting in one corner of square - your choice.

Follow Row 4 instructions across.  Chain 1, turn.

When row is complete, open pop tab so piece lays flat.  You might have to do some stretching for everything to look right and fall into place.

Row 2:  Now place right sides of pop tab and 2nd square together, 2 single crochet stitches in each hole across.

This pic shows the back side.
When row is complete, open piece so it lays flat.

You might have to do some stretching for everything to look right and fall into place. Follow this same process for connecting the other 2 squares.

Repeat Row 1 and 2 to connect remaining 2 squares.

Working bottom:
Row 1b:  Starting at bottom edge of connected squares, with right side of pop tab facing right side of piece, attach red with slip stitch, follow Row 4 instructions.  When row is complete, open pop tabs so piece lays flat. Change to color gray, chain 1, turn.

Row 2b:  2 single crochet stitches in each hole across, chain 1, turn.
Row 3b:  2 single crochet stitches in each stitch across.  Change to color red.
Row 4b:  With right side of pop tab facing right side of piece, follow Row 4 instructions.  When row is complete, open pop tabs so piece lays flat.  Fasten off, weave in ends.

Repeat Row 1b thru Row 3b for other side.  Follow the same Row 2 instructions above for connecting both sides together - with red place right sides of pop tab and other side together, 2 single crochet stitches in each hole across.

This is what the bottom looks like when finished -

(Left Pic) Outisde Side View / (Right Pic) Inside View

T-shirt Lining:
Using the upper part of the t-shirt that is leftover, whichever color you want for the lining, lay the granny square piece flat on the t-shirt material.

Measure and cut around the pouch.  Sew the lining to the inside/wrong side of pouch with matching thread.

Free Pattern: Crochet Pop Tab Bow Ring

Has anyone ever asked what is the inspiration behind one your designs?

Don't laugh .... I was inspired to create the Pop Tab Bow Ring after watching a recent episode of 'Jerseylicious'.

The show itself doesn't do anything for me but I love tuning in to see what jewelry Tracey and Olivia will be wearing.  The earrings are so big they look heavy enough to rip right out of their ears and the rings almost swallow up the whole hand.

So when I saw Tracey wearing this big bow ring I just had to make one for myself.

So I wondered what would a pop tab bow ring look like, and here it is:

Here is the pattern for you to make one for yourself:

SKILL LEVEL:  Easy
MATERIALS:
  • Crochet Hook - Size F
  • Plastic Yarn:  1 plastic bag of choice (recommended strip width:  approx 1")
  • 1 Pop/Pul Tab (cleaned with a smooth inside edge)
  • Sewing or Craft Needle
*Foundation:  Join plastic yarn aka plarn with a slip stitch in a hole of the pull/pop tab, single crochet in same hole and single crochet in next hole, turn.

Row 1:  Chain 1, 2 single crochet in both stitches, turn. (4)
Row 2:  Chain 1, 2 single crochet in first stitch, single crochet in next 2 stitches and 2 single crochet in last stitch, turn. (6)
Row 3:  Chain 1, 2 single crochet in first stitch,  single crochet in next 4 stitches and 2 single crochet in last stitch, turn. (8)
Row 4:  Chain 1, Chain 1, 2 single crochet in first stitch, single crochet in next 6 stitches and 2 single crochet in last stitch, turn. (10)  Fasten off, weave in ends.

*Repeat on opposite side of pop tab.

Ring:  (Designer Note:  The # of rows on each side will determine how tight/loose you want the ring - 5 rows was a nice fit for my ring and pointer fingers and a good tight fight for my middle finger.)

*With wrong side facing you, join plarn with a slip stitch through existing stitch, single crochet in same space, single crochet in next hole through existing stitch, turn.  Chain 1, single crochet in both stitches for 5 rows.  DO NOT BIND OFF, remove hook making a big enough loop so you don't lose the stitch.  *Repeat on opposite for 5 rows.  Do a quick fitting.  When completed, on one side complete stitches and weave in loose end.  On the other side fasten off leaving long enough tail to whip stitch both ends together.

When completed, on one side complete stitch and weave in loose end. On the other side fasten off leaving long enough tail to whip stitch both ends together.

Edging is optional:
  • The gray bow was edged using the reverse single crochet by joining the plarn with a slip stitch at the foundation row then reverse single crochet stitch in each end row stitch around back to the foundation row.  Repeat on the opposite side.
  • The brown bow was edged by joining plarn with a slip stitch at the foundation row, *chain 1, slip stitch in next end row stitch.  *Repeat around to back to the foundation row. Repeat for the opposite side.

Optional but recommended:  After creating the design I noticed the bow didn't  want to lay flat.  It kept bending up.   To remedy this, use the extra matching plarn and needle to stitch the foundation row to the top of the ring.  I found this did the trick.

Wear it proudly or gift it to a 'Olivia' or 'Tracy' you know!!!

Free Plarn Pattern - Pop Tab Ring of Elegance

Personally, deciding on what piece(s) of jewelry to wear is just as important as deciding on what outfit to wear.    And, big jewelry pieces are definitely the fad right now.  We see it all the time on tv, in the magazines as well as our own day to day social settings.

That's exactly the concept behind my newest pop/pull tab design - Pop Tab Ring of Elegance.  This ring proves that recycling can be upcycled to something beautiful.

This ring can easily be crocheted in less than 30 minutes.  This is pattern is perfect for all skill levels.  All you need to know is how to make a chain, the single crochet and reverse single crochet.

Materials needed:
  • 8 pop/pull tabs
  • Size G crochet hook
  • 1 plastic bag of choice
  • Button or Pin or whatever you want to use for complimenting the pop tabs.    Let your creative juices flow.   Here I've used a button that I removed from an old suit jacket that was tossed in the trash.   But, really anything can be used.
  • Craft needle

Pattern:

Ring Base - Make 2:
Round 1:  Using the magic circle, make 8 single crochet stitches in the ring (close the ring not tightly, leave a big enough hole for the button hole to go through), slip stitch in first single crochet stitch to complete round.

Round 2:  Chain 1 and make a single crochet in same stitch, make 2 single crochet stitches in each stitch around, slip stitch in first single crochet stitch to complete round.

Round 3: (reverse single crochet) Chain 1, now working in the opposite direction make a single crochet stitch in each stitch around and join with a slip stitch in first single crochet stitch to complete round.  Fasten off and weave in both ends.

Now for the finger piece:
Row 1:  Chain 3, single crochet in second chain from hook and in last chain, turn.

Row 2:  Chain 1, single crochet in first stitch and in next stitch.
Repeat row 2 until desired fit.
Determine fit by placing an end on one side of finger then wrap it around ending on other side of finger.  Don't put the ends together because you want a tight fit as there is some stretch with plastic yarn.

Whip stitch the ends to the right side of a ring base.  Noticed I said 'right side' because the wrong side will be sewn to the back of the pop/pull tabs.

On the other ring base we'll be attaching the pop/pull tabs.  Do this by stitching the right side of 4 pop/pull tabs to the wrong side like clock  hands at 12, 3, 6 and 9.

Then sew the remaining 4 pop/pull tabs in the empty spaces between the existing pop/pull tabs.

Don't worry about how it looks because your stitching will be hidden with the other ring base.

Now place your button on top of the same ring base poking the stitch hole through the middle circle and stitch it to the ring base.  Remember, it doesn't matter how it looks because your stitching will be hidden.

You now have 2 separate finished pieces.

To finish the ring, stitch the 2 ring bases together.  The easiest stitching method I have found is first insert your needle from behind one of the  pop/pull tabs of your choice through a stitch in round 2 to the front.  Then insert the needle in the next stitch over through the middle and out the back of the bottom ring base.  Now working on the bottom, insert the needle in next stitch over, through the middle and to the top of ring.  Repeat this completely around the ring base until both ring bases are stitched together.  You may need to repeat the stitching for a second round just for added security.

Viola - your ring is ready to wear!!!!

Non Pop/Pull Tab Idea:

This pattern works great for those that are not into pop/pull tabs yet.  Just crochet one ring base and finish it by sewing either an oversized button or smaller button to the top.  It still looks great and gives you another fun flirty upcycled jewelry piece.

I would love to see pics of rings you've made with this pattern.    Send them to me at plastiquerecreations@yahoo.com or twooleydesigns@gmail.com.

Free Pop Tab Bracelet Crochet Pattern - Lazy 'P' Pop Tab Plarn Bracelet

Pop Tab Bracelets are one of my favorite fashion accessories so I am always thinking of new designs and techniques to create with them.

I recently completed a new plarn handbag using the traditional Puff Stitch as part of the design.  Impressed by the character the stitch offered to my handbag, it has been added to my list of favorite stitches.
As I was thinking of my next pop tab bracelet design, I decided to see what a pop tab bracelet would look like using the traditional Puff Stitch.  At first, it lacked the finesse I was expecting.  Then I decided to make the chain 1 through the next pop tab giving the appearance the Puff Stitch was 'laying down on the job' so to speak.  That was it.

That's how I came up with the name of Lazy 'P'.

Made with Dollar Tree plastic yarn aka plarn

SKILL LEVEL:  Easy
MATERIALS:
·        Crochet Hook – Size G
·        Plastic Yarn:  Approximately 2 standard size plastic grocery bags (width of strip – approx  ¾”)
·         Approx 18-22 Pop/Pull Tabs (clean & consistent in size).  The # needed will be determined by size of wrist
·        (optional) Craft Needle for weaving in ends
Important Note:   Not all plastic is made the same.  When using plarn, achieving the desired size or gauge is dependent on the texture, thickness and strip width of the plastic yarn.

ABBREVIATIONS

ch(s) = chain(s)

po = plarn over

sl = slip

st(s) = stitch(es)

Helpful Tips:
·        Read through pattern instructions before beginning.
·        Plastic in general is susceptible to ripping/tearing due to its very nature.
o   Weaving in ends - it is best to maneuver your craft needle behind a puff st and not through the stitch to avoid splitting the plastic yarn.
      ·        The edged hole of the pop tab will be always be placed behind a non-edged hole.

Special Stitch:
Puff Stitch:  Po, insert hook in pop tab, po, pull through and bring plarn up higher than normal (3 loops on hook), po, insert hook in same pop tab, po, pull through and bring plarn up to height of rest of stitches (5 loops on hook), *po, insert hook once again into the same pop tab, po, pull through and bring plarn up to height of rest of stitches (7 loops on hook), [IMPORTANT NOTE:  For more puff,  repeat from * until enough puff is achieved.] po, pull plarn through ALL loops on hook.

Instructions:
With 2 pop tabs overlapped, join plarn with a sl st in overlapped hole, ch 1, place a new pop tab under previous pop tab, make a puff st in that hole.

*Place another pop tab under the previous pop tab, in new overlapped hole make a sl st, ch1 and Puff st.

*Continue overlapping pattern until desired length is achieved ending in last overlapped hole.

Continue until bracelet is long enough to fit around wrist.  [Fitting Tip – wrap bracelet around wrist overlapping the first and last pop tab.  There is some stretch so no additional tabs are needed to maneuver finished bracelet over hand.]

Remove hook from st (make a big enough loop so completed work doesn’t come out because you’ll be coming back to it).
Working on opposite side, in 1st overlapped hole join with a *sl st, ch 1 and Puff st.  *Repeat pattern in each overlapped hole to last overlapped hole.   Before connecting the ends, do a second fitting.

The 1st  hole is skipped as it will be worked when forming the circle.

Form Circle - Overlap the ends together to form a circle.
Both ends pulled together

*Work pattern of sl st, ch1 and puff st in this hole. Finish by making a sl st in 1st puff st.  Fasten off, weave in ends behind the puff st.

*Repeat pattern on opposite side.

ENJOY YOUR NEW FASHION ACCESSORY!! !
